It's late June and our first two months of summer have come and gone. In the midst of summer travel, college week and incoming indoor club contracts, I have been getting a lot of questions about what options for training beach volleyball Flourish will be providing over the winter.
If your athlete has "the bug" and is hooked on beach volleyball - then this post is for you. We're going to share how the Winter Beach "Elite Development Program" is structured, why it is important to train beach year round, what you can expect to get out of it, and the nuts and bolts (price, schedule, travel itinerary).
With 90 schools offering NCAA beach volleyball in the 2020-2021 season, athletes are increasingly realizing that in addition to beach volleyball being an incredibly fun and rewarding sport, there are many options to play at the collegiate level.
Living in Colorado, beach volleyball athletes are at an environmental disadvantage (inclement weather) relative to athletes training in Texas, Florida, California, Arizona, etc. This disadvantage can be neutralized by training on an indoor beach court and competing year round.
The winter beach EDP is an opportunity for a small group of athletes to go IN DEPTH with our coaching staff - and come out the other end prepared to compete at a high level in the summer. If you're serious about playing beach volleyball in college, training beach over the winter is a must!
There are 3 competitive levels in the Winter Beach "Elite Development Program" (EDP). Players must be evaluated and offered a spot in one of the following groups:
18u EDP: Players who are committed to play in college, or are striving towards this goal
16u EDP: Development program for the next wave of elite beach players
14u EDP: Designed for players who love beach, but also play indoor club (does not travel)
Winter Beach runs from October through April (we practice outdoors from May - September). Winter Beach 18u & 16u EDP groups practice 3x per week, and the 14u group practices 2x per week.
One of the best parts about playing in the Winter Beach program is the travel trips to WARMER WEATHER over the winter here in Colorado.
While there is at least 1 local tournament at the Island/Oasis over the winter here in CO, we have found that there is a lot of depth to the experience of traveling out of state to compete and train with other beach clubs. The networking and relationships the girls form on these travel trips are incredible - and open doors for tournaments down the road.
We try to get out to the beach, or, a warmer location at least once every 2 months. Here's a rough schedule of what we're planning - this schedule is fluid and is only meant to give a picture of what we're shooting for:
What about contracts? How do we secure our spot?
How much does it cost to play winter beach?
Can I play High School / Club Volleyball in addition to Winter Beach?
Can I sign up for part-time or 1/2 program?
